Update Motorola Backflip to 2.2 Froyo beta-2

Dear All,
Here's the release of beta 2 version of froyo for Motorola backflip.
Guide to upgrade (for users with 1.5, 1.6 os, others scroll below):



  1. Download the recovery j_r0dd-mb300-v2.0, unzip and copy to your phone’s SD card.
  2. Download the Custom ROM : Froyo 2.2.1 for Motorola Backflip-beta2. And copy to your phone’s SD card.
  3. Download the Gapps : GApps for Froyo 2.2.1 – Motorola Backflip. And copy to your phone’s SD card.
  4. Download USB drivers for 32bit/x86 or 64bit/x64 and install.
  5. Download the android sdk and extract it in your C drive.
  6. Backup all your data (songs, images, videos, contacts, etc.) on phone and sd card.

Procedure:

Note: First inst. custom recovery if you dont have, then flash the ROM.


For custom recovery:


  1. First of all you should root your Motorola Backflip, if not already have.
  2. Open command prompt, by typing “cmd” in run.
  3. Open c drive and navigate to android-sdk_r07-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools.
  4. Drag n drop the adb.exe in command prompt and in the same line type “start-server”, and hit enter. The ADB server will start. Now plug in your phone make sure its in USB Debugging mode. (C:\android-sdk_r07-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools\adb.exe start-server)
  5. Drag n drop adb.exe again in command prompt and type “shell” and hit enter.
  6. type “su” enter and approve the request on phone if prompted, then type
    flash_image recovery /sdcard/j_r0dd-mb300-v1.8.img
Now you have custom recovery on your phone.

For flashing ROM


  1. Reboot phone in recovery mode – power off phone –> press and hold camera button –> switch on phone while keeping camera button pressed.Phone will enter fast boot, immediately press volume down key(though will say up pressed) and wait until recovery loads.
  2. On your recovery menu goto Wipe and select “Wipe all” this will delete all data and cache off your phone. 
  3. Press back button to go back to main recovery menu and select “Flash zip from SD”. You’ll see the text “update-unofficial-cm-6.1.2-motus-beta2-signed.zip″. Press the home key. ROM will begin flashing :) 
  4. After flashing the Froyo you will have to flash the Gapps you downloaded to get Android Market etc.
  5. After completion, select “Reboot system now”. It may take upto 10-15 minutes to boot for the first time.
Enjoy your new Motorola Backflip with this fast Custom Froyo 2.2.1 ROM

For users on Beta 1 froyo 2.2.1, mentioned in the previous posts in this site, please upgrade using following steps:
1. copy ROM and gapps zip files to sd.
2. go to recovery mode (hoping you havent deleted the j_r0dd-mb300-v2.0 img file)
3. flash the ROM (no need for wipe all) (wipe all if you have 2.1 Eclair)
4. flash the gapps zip file.

Camera issue has been fixed. Camera flip mode needs implementation

    Yes. It works on all backflips..

    beta version means work is going on. Beta1 had minor issues with camera, gps, etc.
    Can help you with zip updates for the cam.

    Beta 2 has a minor issue with vid cam. All other issues seems to be fixed.

    both of them are faster than the fully functional 2.1 rom.

    dude can it work on the indian motorola back flip with 1.5 version and no motoblur
    i had rooted my phone earlier and installed super user and android terminal earlier to start flashing using flash recovery everything worked well but flash recovery software didnt install in the phone

    now i need suggestion from on shall i try the process or wait till motorola update of 2.1

    This works on all backflips.
    Make sure you are rooted sucessfully. If you root with the guide mentioned here, u don't have to install superuser manually again.

    There's no official update for India yet, and there won't be any.

    So we are on our own. Will help you if you got stuck in the process. Go ahead.

    will this version work properly then 1.5
    i didnt try eclair tough i had downloaded it from the us moto site,how different in functionality is it different from it.

    Modders are working on it all the time...

    The 2.1eclair from moto site is not for outside US.
    So don't try flashing it.

    Moreover if you want fully funtional eclair..

    when i use fast boot and select recovery mode a screen comes up with a exclamation mark in a triangle and stays for like fore ever

    I guess you are looking for hard reset.

    When a yellow triangle will appear. Press on the screen just above the back key.
    Select option wipedata/factory reset (Alt + W). The Backflip will then complete the hard reset.

    Then properly root your phone as per mentioned guide.

    Make sure you use j_r0dd recovery and not any other.

    i m stuck..Sumeet Save can u help me out.. getting error here: "Drag n drop adb.exe again in command prompt and type “shell” and hit enter." The error message reads as "Device not found", though i have connected my backflip and it is in debugging mode as welll.. help me out dude..

    Make sure you have installed the drivers and your phone is rooted properly as per the guide mentioned here.

    then try switching between usb mode and debugging mode...

    (Question is not related to this post)

    You must have flashed some incompleted ROM or deleted some files in it. I have seen such probs with ROMs published in many sites worldwide. and the ROM mentioned here works good. You may flash any rom mentioned in this blog.

    Also, its possible that you may be able to connect for Debugging even though its not showing.

    And yes.. use the original data cable and not the generic one...

    hey sumeet...i flashed using cyanogen mod rom only...n moreover when i try to enter recovery mode after having flashed my phone..a triangle appears with an exclamation mark..n stays forever..plz help me out sumeet..!!

    Its not only the rom you used, also the recovery, the SDK version.

    Anyways, try this,
    When a yellow triangle appears. Press on the screen just above the back key. Select option wipedata/factory reset (Alt + W). The Backflip will then complete the hard reset. Not sure it works all the time.

    Last option: goto stock ROM using RSD Lite.

    thanks summeeet.. now a new prob.. i am not able to proceed after 'su".. the error says permission denied, the phone dint ask for any kind of permission and have even removed the lock code.. how to proceed now..

    The prob is, you dont have access to the root...

    Check the following:
    1- Are you rooted as per per mentioned guide(step 1)

    2- Do you see the 'superuser' application in your phone app list

    If yes, then try updating the superuser application.

    my phone was not responding..since last night after i did wipe all, i was getting the image of an open box with a yellow arrow and a phone lying outside the box.. i removed the battery and restarted the phone with the camera key passed and did wipe all again.. but i m stuck now.. since i was unable to go back and "select Flash zip from SD”. i had to select reboot phone from the screen.. sincerely request you to help me out

    the folders named Froyo 2.2 and Gapps have a folder with the same name.. so when i m copying it in the sd card, it is asking to replace the precious one.. how to go ahead now..

    two quick questions. Does this guide work after updating to 2.1 from motorola's website, and does this remove the motoblur stuff that is bundled with the att phones. Not that I'm a big motoblur user just switched from iphone to backflip because i lost my iphone. I wanna remove the bloated crap that comes with the backflip and seems like this is the best option, but wanna keep stability up since i use this phone for business and what not. Also the motoblur stuff seems like it be useful for locating my phone if lost and keeping contacts updating (even though gmail handles that for me now).

    You have trouble getting super user access.

    Make sure : 1.phone is Rooted properly
    2.phone connected in debuging mode
    3.All 3 files copied in sd card

    Yes it will work on backflip with 2.1 official.

    But you will have to root it. Try Zroot app from the market. Must be able to root it with one click. If not, try the guide here(I haven't. Tested it on 2.1 official, but should work)

    Motoblur not available on 2.2. But for me google was enough for backing up all contacts.

    I came across several others, but this was the easiest to follow.

    Even though I was already rooted, I was having trouble with adb recognizing device in command prompt, so I used Android Commander for "/sdcard/recovery.img" part of process.

    This Cyanogen ROM ROCKS!

    Warranty is void as soon as you root your phone...

    Sumeet pls guide a lot of ppl are stuck on

    the Exclamation mark and phone if we click above the back button the 3 opts we get are
    1.exit + reboot
    2. something about update.zip
    3. the hard wipe one

    done hardwipe it went back to normal
    super user was already there so din need to re root
    followed the flashing steps again same exclamation chose 2nd opt
    it says no update.zip found...made a copy of the 63mb file and named it update.zip
    it opens this time but it dusnt find signature
    phew im tired pls help :D

    the prob is you are not able to get custom recovery in your phone.

    Try the custom recovery steps again... if it fails then will have to fastboot... will upload a guide for it shortly...

    Guys i have installed froyo on moto backflip which i brought in india. Thanks to sumeet i moved from android 1.5 to froyo.

    So the answer is yes, you can upgrade to froyo from android 1.5 on a moto backflip brought in india.

    hey sumeet...archit ds side..i am deadly interested to update my bakflip to ds froyo rom. but the problem is that i m quite unaware about
    1. how to work in the cmp promt and navigate to file, drag n drop files etc..neva did it.sooo...

    2. how to connect the phone in usb debugging mode.

    3.if i try to update to it..then what is the current camera issue as i use it alot....

    please help me out as m quite unaware of dese terms even flashing rom etc....but i m so hightly bored with 1.5 os..and need a change....might sound stupid but can u please talk to me verbally on any phone and guide me through....i live in jaipur...awaiting a positive response...thnx man..

    Hi Summet... I have followed all steps exactly as you said. Please confirm if the phone needs to be connected to the USB cable while Flashing ROM, if yes, in what mode? Do I re-boot while connected to the PC?
    Custom Recovery steps were successful for me as well as rooting the phone. But I had the same problem as Navam. I cannot see the menu in bootloader as you mentioned. I am seeing exactly what Navam said.
    Also, after re-doing all the steps including Rooting my phone again, I am unable to get past Flashing the ROM step 1. Please help. I am stuck.

    @aniket Debugging mode while you install custom recovery (first part). no need to connect for flashing ROM.

    Expecting you have successfully rooted, make sure you have copied all 3 files to sd. connected phone in debugging mode. also see that there is no error when you type 'su'.

    @Sumeet I have successfully installed the update. It works great now! Some issues with syncing my contacts but I think I will fix them soon. Also, the app force closes when trying to set a ringtone from the page. Not a big issue, look forward to sorting that out in the next update. Cheers!

    I have a camera problem in 1.5. 1 out of 4 pics is good the rest only some portions of pics are visible and even with the video if record 2 mins video, i can only watch may be 10 secs. I have this issue right from the beginning, i thought it was memory card problem and i bought a new memory card but the same problem repeats. so it must be software issue.
    what i have to do now? will the 2.1 update fixes my camera problem

    @sakarsh... cm7.. great updated.. but just waiting to get a fully funtional version... still in testing days.. cm6 development has most probably on hold...

    @srinivas.. you can probably claim warranty... a very rare chance that original firmware will have any probs.. if out of warranty, try going for upgrade...

    I'm also facing few issues
    I browse a lot...most of my friends complain that my phone is not reachable most of d time or they just get a series of beep but does not get connected....I don't face any network issues...I then realised that everytime I browse, calls( incoming calls) don't get connected
    & also if I have to make a call it takes at least 20 to 30 secs to get connected....is dis becoz of d software I'm using

    Kindly help me ......

    to upgrade... just follow the guide...
    you need to root the phone before upgrade...(step1)..

    usually smart phones dont have such probs. as the data connectivity is lost as soon as there is a incoming call... it will again depend on the network provider..
    Airte... doesnt have any such issue with me atleast...

    for upgrade you better wait for a few days as cm7 os2.3 is almost out.. keep checking this blog for latest update... you can go ahead and root your phone though..

    I have bought my motorola backflip 4 days early and i have warranty of 2 years one year from croma i want to upgrade my os to 2.2 should i upgrade or wait till warranty overs and if anything happens during the process is their any chance to get my phone running

    so far theres no one in my knowledge who has bricked his phone.

    2.2 is not 100%. so i would recommend you to wait for a couple of weeks as 2.3 could be on the way. watch the reviews, then decide either to stick to warranty or upgrade(upgrade recommended).

    The stock rom is completely outdated..

    hi i am trying to update my backflip 1.5 to 2.2.1 i downloaded all the files and unzip all the files copy in to sd card.
    and i started from command prompt first i run the adb.exe start-server up to here its ok after that i run adb.exe shell and hit enter after that $ this symbol came after that no change in my system and my phone.

    after that what can i do

    i stopped my anti-virus and tried again now i root my mobile and run the adb.exe start-server,adb.exe shell after that i enter the su and enter flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img after that i restart my phone and press volume down key it shows key up pressed after that one exclamatory symbol came i wait for up to half n hour but no change in my phone

    most of the questions are already answered in previous comments.

    @romit. make sure you have copied the rom and the gapps file in the sd card. ald flash those files.

    @shubh. theres another guide for rooting. click on 'root your motorola' in the fist step.

    thats known issue in this rom....

    download latest (2.3) rom from modmymobile(website) and flash it as explained above...
    Multitouch wont be working in the new rom..

    Dear Sumeet,Great update but my backflip(Indian version 1.5) after rooting it im getting super user access and its all fine but after going to the recovery menu. im getting a triangle with ! symbol in it.I have seen some videos in youtube they are getting a MB300 recovery menu as u said with a android symbol backside.Why i am not getting like that???..Pls help me out of this..

    Hi Summet,

    I'm having trouble flashing ROM.

    installing custom recovery ends with:

    #flash_image recovery/sdcard/recovery.img
    usage: flash_image partition file.img
    #

    after this I start the recovery mode, but i'm getting that traingle, so i followed the steps you suggested others. pressed the key just above back button, it showed me two options of

    Reboot (menu+back)
    wipedata/factory reset (Alt+W)

    but after wiping data+deleting cache, the only option i get is to reboot and that takes me to a factory reset phone. i tried pressing back for "Flash zip from SD" but the back key doesnt work there.

    I've tried and re-tried the whole process again; re-rooted again and everything. but it gets stuck at the point where i dont see any other options on the recovery menu.

    Please Help Asap..! been trying this for two days..

    step 6 : make sure you type 'su' and accept allow when prompted..

    yr my market is running very slow as compared to explorer and emails etc,, connection speed used to be gud on 1.5 bt after installing this today its nt satisfactory...cant open even a single app. it keeps on loading for 30-40mins..so kindly help..waiting for reply

Coz i called d motorola helpline and dey said ders no upgrade available. Besides my fone doesnt have d motoblur thingy! PLEASE HELPP MEE! :( Are u like 100% sure it can be upgraded? :O

    motorola doesnt have official upgrade outside US... so they cant help u in upgrading ur device..

    try force closing the default launcher. once you are in go launcher..

    Download the recovery j_r0dd-mb300-v2.0, unzip and copy to your phone’s SD card. (did you do this)

    OR

    step 6, type 'su' and approve when prompted on screen...

    do these both things correctly...

    thnx for ur help. i have rooted my motorola mb300. but its showing "falsh from update.zip from sd card." i rename my rom to update.zip. than he found the room else its saying no rom. than finly its says "signature not presnt. installtion aborted."
    now please help me to upgrade my phone to fryo or eclair or any.

    and i get
    "error opening "/sdcard/j_r0dd-mb300-v2.0.img: no such file or directory"

    the j_r0dd file IS in the sdcard...what do i do?

    I have upgraded my Mb300 as oper your guideline, it is done as well.

    Now there is no camera present, so which one should be used? Bcos i have downloaded some but not working well and always FC.
    Also not able to record sound through sound recorder and in video also sound is not recording, it is just plan video without sound.
    While previos android1.5 was good at multimedia experience.

    Kindly guide..
